Ordinance 967-13, passed at a regular meeting of the board on Wednesday, May 8, will apply to all applicants for employment with the city and all of its agencies, divisions or programs, officials said. Volunteers must meet the same requirement.

“Today, criminal background checks are essential to ensure that our resort community hires qualified staff with a clean history, no matter what position they hold,” said Commissioner Anthony Leonetti. “With this kind of safeguard, residents and visitors can rest assured that the city employees and volunteers they meet each day have no history that would disqualify them from service. We’re glad to institute this policy, which we believe is in the best interest of everyone in our community.”

The criminal background checks will be performed by the New Jersey State Police.
