Boardwalk Basketball Classic Tournament ~ Dec. 26 – Jan. 2

The Wildwoods, NJ – December 5, 2011 – The 14th annual Boardwalk Basketball Classic will return to the Oceanfront Arena at the Wildwoods Convention Center December 26 through January 2, featuring an impressive lineup of high school boys and girls basketball teams from the South Jersey and Delaware Valley areas. Included in this year’s annual holiday basketball tournament will be an additional day called “Battle at the Boards” which will feature six games that include each of the boys and girls high school basketball teams from Cape May County.

“We are very excited about the number and quality of teams involved in this year’s tournament,” said Ernie Troiano, the Director of the Boardwalk Basketball Classic. “The tournament will bring thousands of people to the Wildwoods and continue to generate thousands of dollars of scholarship funding for students who attend Wildwood High and Wildwood Catholic High schools.”

The Boardwalk Basketball Tournament was founded in 1998 and continues to be the largest single-venue coed high school holiday basketball tournament in the United States. The tournament has raised nearly $300,000 in college scholarship money since its inception for graduating seniors at Wildwood and Wildwood Catholic high schools, the two host schools of the event. The tournament is run by an all-volunteer board that solicits sponsorships, ticket sales, and other support.

For the first time, the Boardwalk Basketball Classic will expand to a seventh day on Monday, January 2, 2012. The Classic will stage a “Battle at the Boards” showcase event featuring all of the boys and girls basketball teams from Cape May County’s high schools including Wildwood, Wildwood Catholic, Ocean City, Cape May Tech, Middle Township, and Lower Cape May Regional. The “Battle at the Boards” is made possible thanks to additional sponsorship courtesy of Crest Savings Bank.

“The Cape May County high school have developed a very intense, albeit friendly, rivalry over the years and we think it’s going to be great for the players, coaches and fans to have an entire day of basketball dedicated to these rivalries,” said Brian Cunniff, the scheduling director for the Boardwalk Basketball Classic. “We encourage basketball fans to get their tickets early for this schedule of six games. It’s a great opportunity for students, parents, and alumni to gather and root on their favorite schools and support scholarships for our local kids.”

The Boardwalk Basketball Classic is sponsored by Crest Savings Bank, the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority, the City of Wildwood, the City of North Wildwood, the Borough of Wildwood Crest, the J. Byrne Agency, Wawa, and by 98.7 The Coast WCZT. Select games will be broadcast live on 98.7 The Coast radio.

All games begin at 9 a.m. daily. No games will be held on January 1, 2012. For further information about the tournament, including the complete schedule, past results, tournament records and ticket information, log on to www.bbclassic.net.
