The Wildwoods are Open for Business Post-Hurricane Irene

The Wildwoods’ businesses, hotels, attractions and beaches are fully re-opened to the public as the five-mile island prepares its “Second Season” and Labor Day Weekend

The Wildwoods, NJ – August 30, 2011 – Hurricane Irene has come and gone with very little effect and the Wildwoods, NJ fully re-opened for business on Monday, August 29. All of the five-mile island’s businesses, hotels and attractions are readily welcoming guests to enjoy the final week of summer before Labor Day and back-to-school. The Wildwoods’ free beaches sustained no damage and are fully opened to the public, with lifeguards on duty throughout the entire island.


“We’re very thankful that there was minimal, if any, effect on the Wildwoods due to Hurricane Irene,” said John Siciliano, executive director of the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority. “Now that the hurricane has passed, the Wildwoods are ready to celebrate Labor Day weekend, as well as the start of the island’s “Second Season” which is full of weekend events and festivals for the entire family through the end of October.”



Two events that were originally scheduled to take place last weekend but were cancelled due to inclement weather are now rescheduled to take place over Labor Day weekend. First, the Wildwood Block Party & Music Festival – originally scheduled for Saturday, August 27 – will now take place starting at noon on Sunday, September 4 at Fox Park, located across from the Wildwoods Convention Center on and FREE live entertainment all afternoon starting at 2p.m. and continuing throughout the evening with a salute to ‘70s Disco at 9 p.m. starring national recording artists Carol Douglas, Evelyn “Champagne” King and The Trammps.


The Wildwoods Convention Center’s annual Sports Cards, Comics, Toys and Collectibles Show in the Starlight Ballroom – originally scheduled for August 26-28 – is now rescheduled for Friday, September 2 through Sunday, September 4. Featuring more than 125 tables of the hottest collectibles, along with autograph guests including pro-wrestling hall-of-famers George ‘The Animal’ Steele and Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka, the show’s hours are 3 p.m.-9 p.m. on Friday, September 2; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday, September 3; and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, September 4.


These rescheduled events will enhance an already fun-packed Labor Day weekend in the Wildwoods, complete with a FREE Labor Day Fireworks Extravaganza on Friday, September 2 at 10 p.m.; FREE live concerts across the island throughout the weekend; and Going Bananas with Crystal – a special appearance from one of Hollywood’s top animal actors, Crystal the Monkey (star of Hangover II, Dr. Doolittle II and Zoo Keeper) on Sunday, September 4.


The All GM Car & Truck Show along Pacific Avenue in Wildwood takes place, Thursday, September 1 through Sunday, September 4, and features a variety of General Motors cars and trucks on display and competing for one of the Island’s Top 25 Awards, cash prizes, Best of Show Stock and Best of Show Modified awards. The Handcraft Unlimited Labor Day Craft Show takes place inside the Wildwoods Convention Center on Saturday, September 3 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, September 4 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.



Labor Day weekend kicks off the Wildwoods’ Second Season of exciting, fun-filled post-summer weekend events and festivals for vacationers looking to spend some time at the shore while the air and water temperatures are still nice.
