Remembering Marty Shapiro and His Gateway 26 Legacy.

Martin “Marty” Shapiro, founder and former co‑owner of Gateway 26, has passed away in Wildwood at the age of 89. Shapiro and his business partner opened Gateway 26 in 1979, growing it into one of the most successful arcades in the country. Even after selling his share in 2007, he remained closely connected to the arcade through 2025.

Shapiro’s impact on the amusement industry spanned decades and touched thousands of lives. He began working at age 16 in a Skee‑Ball parlor and, by 21, owned his own Fascination parlor. After moving to Wildwood in 1968, he opened a Fascination location with partners and continued to expand his footprint on the boardwalk.

Under his leadership, the business grew rapidly, operating 32 different amusements in Wildwood during the 1980s. By 1991, he had sold his interests in other ventures to focus entirely on Gateway 26. His dedication to the industry and its customers led him to serve three terms as president of the New Jersey Amusement Association.

Gateway 26 plans to host a celebration of life later this summer to honor Marty Shapiro’s legacy and the lasting impact he made on Wildwood and the amusement community.
