High electric bills have been a significant concern for residents in South Jersey recently. Several factors have contributed to the surge in electricity costs:
- Rate Increases: Atlantic City Electric (ACE) implemented a 13% supply rate increase and a 5% distribution rate increase on June 1st, 20242. These increases are intended to cover the costs of electricity supply and infrastructure improvements.
- Extreme Weather: The summer of 2024 was one of the hottest on record, leading to higher electricity usage for cooling.
- Smart Meters: Some customers have reported higher bills after the installation of new smart meters, although ACE has stated there is no direct correlation.
Congressman Jeff Van Drew has been actively seeking answers and solutions to these high bills. He has called for an independent audit of ACE’s billing systems and a freeze on rate increases until the investigation is complete.\
