Dead 54-Foot Fin Whale Washes Up on Barnegat Light Beach

A 54-foot decomposing fin whale that washed up on Barnegat Light’s 19th Street beach Sunday morning. The whale was to large to remove and was buried on the beach hours later.

The whale found had impact on its right side, probably caused by a ship,. There will also large bite wounds – 18 to 24 inches – likely caused by big sharks, who fed on the whale’s body after it was wounded and until it washed into the surf. The whale was probably struck a few days ago.

Late last week a 50 ft whale was alive when it beached @ Cape Henlopen, Del but later drowned and was buried on the beach.
