Tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, is when the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will auction off leases to develop wind farms. They will auction off almost half a million acres from Cape May all the way to Montauk which includes six large offshore water parcels. The auction area for sale is called New York Bight which will be the largest auction ever to take place in federal waters.
On Jan. 12, 2022, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced that BOEM will hold a wind energy auction for more than 480,000 acres in the New York Bight. This will be the first offshore wind energy auction under the Biden-Harris Administration.
The auction begins at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on Feb. 23, 2022 and will allow offshore wind developers to bid on six lease areas – the most areas ever offered in a single auction.
