Swimmer missing near 2nd street N Willdwood

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. – July 27, 2012– Authorities say a father – at the beach with his daughter – went missing after getting swept under the water by a current.

It happened near Second Avenue near the Hereford Inlet just before 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Authorities say four people – two fathers and their daughters were walking in knee-deep water at the beach. As they were walking, they fell into a drop in the sand and were caught in the undertow.

One father and daughter managed to make it back to shore to call for help. A Jet Ski operator was able to rescue the second daughter but 52-year-old Brad Smith disappeared into the water.

Officials say the current was especially rough around 7:00 p.m. and a number of swimmers had to be rescued.

Action News was there as search crews took to the water and to the air. Around 8:29 p.m. the Coast Guard called off the search.

The search is expected to resume Saturday morning.
